Complainant Name: Clauses Noted: 1 Publication: South London Press Complaint: Steve Reed, Leader of Lambeth Council, complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had reported that he had been criticised "for making unfounded allegations" against another councillor, and that it had described him as "smearing" her. He considered that this implied his statements had been untrue, when he considered them to have been accurate and founded in publicly established facts.
Resolution: The complaint was resolved when the newspaper published the following statement: On 30 October we published an article about comments made by Cllr Steve Reed about Cllr Betty Evans-Jacas. We regret that our article might have been interpreted as suggesting Cllr Reed's comments were untrue and inaccurate. Our intention was simply to report the reaction to the comments in some quarters not to make any judgement on the accuracy of that response, nor to imply that Councillor Reed's comments were untrue. We are happy to make the position clear. Date Published: 07/04/2010 << Go Back |
