Clauses Noted: 1
Mr Michael Turberville complained to the Press Complaints Commission under Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Code of Practice about an article which reported that the social drug GBL was "almost tasteless and odourless when diluted". The complainant stated that this was inaccurate; the diluted form of the drug had a distinctive taste. He believed that the article could worry members of the public unnecessarily that their drinks had been spiked by the drug.
The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the redaction of the reference and the publication of the following statement:In an article on May 2 about the death of accountant Lynette Nock, who was thought to have taken party drug GBL, we said that it was ‘almost tasteless and odourless'. We have been asked to clarify that the drug has a distinctive taste.
