Complaint:

Ms Lesley Shaw complained to the Press Complaints Commission about an article, which she considered to have been inaccurate and intrusive, in breach of Clauses 1 (Accuracy) and 3 (Privacy) of the Editors' Code of Practice.

The article reported on the complainant's eventful journey home, aboard an American Airlines flight. She objected to the publication of her photograph, and said it was not the case that smoke entered into the cabin of the plane, following an electrical fault. The complainant also said that Glasgow was not her home town.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following clarification:

‘Following our story of October 5 about Lesley Shaw's 42-hour flight ordeal, we have been asked to make clear that the article was based on her Twitter and Facebook comments. Ms Shaw did not see or smell smoke in the cabin herself, but heard rumours from other passengers. Further, she is not aware that a power cut after landing at Shannon did not cause further delays to the flight. The picture we sourced for the story was not recent but was taken several years ago at a music festival'.
