Complainant Name: Clauses Noted: 1 Publication: Daily Mail Complaint: Mr Bruce Elliott complained to the Press Complaints Commission about an article, appearing online only, which he considered to have inaccurately stated that two-thirds of high-earners had "deserted" Britain following the introduction of a 50p tax rate. In fact the statistical drop in the number of people earning an annual income of over £1m reflected not just those who had left the country but those who had reduced their taxable incomes through "forestalling". Resolution: The complaint was resolved after the PCC negotiated the publication of the following footnote, published alongside the amended online article: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that two thirds of Britain's top earners ‘deserted the UK' after the 50p top tax rate was introduced. We are happy to clarify that millionaires leaving the UK was a minor factor in the fall in tax revenue from the group but a large proportion was lost from people forestalling payments.Date Published: 04/02/2013 << Go Back |
