Complaint:

Chris Magee complained to the Press Complaints Commission that the newspaper had published inaccurate information relating to animal testing for the purposes of medical research and the development of household products in breach of Clause 1 (Accuracy) of the Editors' Practice.

Resolution:

The complaint was resolved when the PCC negotiated the publication of the following clarification in the newspaper's ‘For the Record' section and online:

Following our article "Testing on animals at 25 year high" of 2 December 2012 we have been asked to make clear that although the numbers of tests on animals increased in 2011 the numbers of tests on monkeys fell. Furthermore, despite the fact that only 13% of animal tests were for the purpose of developing new medicines, it was incorrect to state the vast majority of tests were conducted for household products as no tests are conducted specifically for named household products and few tests are undertaken for the ingredients of household products.
