| Commission to meet in Manchester The PCC is a body for the whole of the United Kingdom. Having a small permanent staff means that it only requires one office - and that is in London. But it is part of our mission to be as visible as possible throughout the entire country. Our regular public meetings in towns and cities up and down the country help achieve this aim. Now, for the first time, the full board of the Commission is to meet outside the capital, during a two-day event in Manchester on the 24th and 25th of November. This will provide Commission members with the opportunity to meet prominent people from the area who either work in, or deal with, the media and who will have unique insights into issues that relate to the PCC's work. Representatives of local police forces, the City Council, Manchester University and the city's Coroner's office will all be present to exchange views. Some of Manchester's media - the Manchester Evening News, Granada Television, GMG Radio and others - will also take part. On the second day of the meeting, Commissioners - who will not be ruling on individual complaints - will discuss a variety of policy and strategy questions. Among other things they will examine the challenges presented by the regulation of online material and discuss recent developments in privacy law. And at the conclusion of the meeting, Helen Newlove, who has become a campaigner against violence after the murder of her husband, will talk to Commissioners about her experiences of dealing with both the media and the PCC. Mrs Newlove has previously used the PCC's services to deal with media harassment. |
